The Graduate program in Applied Science and Technology (AS&T) focuses on studies involving the application of
physical and mathematical techniques to fundamental investigations and emerging areas within the physical and life
sciences. Major areas of emphasis are in applied physics, engineering sciences, and mathematical sciences. AS&T is a
Ph.D. program; however, students who are interested in pursuing a Master's of Science degree may complete the additional
requirements while continuing to work toward the Ph.D.
In addition, students who have been admitted to the program may also apply for the newly-created Designated Emphasis (DE) in Nanoscale Science and Engineering (NSE), and the newly-created emphasis (DE) in Energy, Science, and Technology (DE EST).

Upcoming AS&T Colloquia:
1. Wed, Oct. 29, 11 AM-12 PM in Sibley Auditorium, Bechtel Engr. Center. Professor Ron Fearing (EECS) will give a talk about biologically inspired adhesives.
2. Wed, Nov. 19, 11 AM-12 PM in 102 Wurster. Professor Ali Javey, EECS will give a talk about Semiconductor Nanowires: From Science to Technology.

(May, 2009) |
|
Bala Pesala has been selected to receive the 2009 Demetri Angelakos Award! This award recognizes a student who, in addition to conducting his/her research, unselfishly takes the time to help colleagues beyond the normal cooperation existing between fellow students. It was established in 1979 in memory of Demetri Angelakos, an EECS graduate student who was working toward his Ph.D. at the time of his death. Professor Constance Chang-Hasnain (EECS) is Bala's research advisor.

AS&T student's research breakthrough is among TIME magazine Top 10 Scientific Discoveries of 2008.
(January, 2009) |
|
Graduate student Jie Yao and his collaborators in Prof. Xiang Zhang's group have made a breakthrough in Nano-photonics: they created a new type of metamaterial that can bend light in the "wrong" direction. Their discovery is a big step towards making an invisible cloak and has been selected by TIME magazine as one of the top 10 scientific discoveries of 2008 and top 50 best inventions of 2008. It is also among the top 100 stories of 2008 by DISCOVER magazine. For more details, please visit Prof. Xiang Zhang's group website.

SAST Second Annual Summer Picnic
(July 7, 2006) |
|
On July 7th, SAST held it's Second Annual Summer Picnic at Tilden Park. This year's awesome turnout nearly doubled the headcount from last year's picnic, which allowed for a formidable selection of picnic foods that included Bala's secret samosas (whose secret turned out to be that he bought them from Vik's Chaat House) and of course Pat's famous guacamole. Other highlights included BBQ Chef Andy dropping the boca burgers into the grill, and a large spider crawling up Chris's leg. SAST hopes that this year's successful picnic foreshadows an even larger turnout for next summer's picnic. (view pictures of the event)
