Admissions Information
Thank you for your interest in graduate study in the Applied Science and Technology Graduate Group at the University of California, Berkeley. The Graduate Program in Applied Science and Technology is a Ph.D. program; however, students who are admitted have the option of obtaining a Master's of Science degree en route to a Ph.D.
All applicants are admitted only for the Fall term of each academic year. Admission cannot be deferred; therefore, you should apply for the Fall term in which you actually intend to enroll in the program. Every applicant must submit all application materials in order to be considered. Applications are not accepted for Spring admission. Complete applications will be considered by the Admissions Committee only if they meet the AS&T application deadline of January 2, 2008.
Academic Preparation: Applicants with a B.A. or B.S. degree in engineering, physics, mathematics, chemistry or other related subjects are eligible for admission. Applicants with a Master's degree are encouraged to apply. If you are applying to AS&T, petitioning for Change of Major or Degree goal, or seeking Readmission, you may use academic records or letters of recommendation previously submitted within the last two years. You must arrange for their transfer from the prior program directly to AS&T if you are petitioning for Change of Major or Degree goal. If your letters of recommendation are more than 2 years old, please be sure to submit new letters from your recommenders. You must meet all current deadlines and requirements and pay all application fees. Make sure that your TOEFL or other required tests meet the current test date cutoffs. Please review the Application Procedure section on the AS&T website to obtain TOEFL and GRE deadline information, and instructions for applying to the program.
Those seeking readmission or Change of Major or Degree Goal will be evaluated and ranked by the Admissions Committee together with new student applications for the Fall 2008 admission cycle.
International Students: Opportunities for financial assistance for international students is extremely limited. Occasionally, we are able to secure a fellowship, research assistantship or non-resident tuition scholarship for a particularly qualified applicant; however, we strongly recommend that international students seek additional extramural financial support. International students are directed to review carefully both the Graduate Admissions website (http://www.grad.berkeley.edu/admissions/index.shtml) and the website for the Services for International Students and Scholars (http://www.ias.berkeley.edu/siss/).
Competitive Admissions Process: Although the minimum grade point average required by Graduate Division is 3.0 (based on a 4.0 GPA scale), the admissions process is highly competitive and most students admitted to the program have a significantly higher GPA. Most successful applicants have GPAs of 3.7 or higher, and GRE quantitative scores above 90%.
Please review the Prospective Students section on the AS&T website to obtain further information on the admissions criteria. You may also contact the Admissions Coordinator by email if you have additional unanswered questions or concerns (ast.program@coe.berkeley.edu). We look forward to receiving your application.
