Application Procedure
The Fall 2008 application process for AS&T is entirely online except for original transcripts (and the GPA calculation page). Please do not mail copies of the Statement of Purpose, GRE and TOEFL scores, publications, resumés or letters of recommendation.
All applications must be submitted through the UC Berkeley campus' on-line application site for graduate admissions (http://www.grad.berkeley.edu/admissions/index.shtml). This year the application includes space for the email addresses, as well as names, of the people writing your letters of recommendation. These email addresses are required for applications to the AS&T program. Please take care to ensure these email addresses, as well as your own email address, are entered correctly.
On the Graduate Division's Application for Graduate Admission (Part B), please list at least 3 faculty members whose research is of particular interest to you. Please list in order of preference and briefly state why.
Directions for submitting the recommendation letters online are included below. We require one official transcript from each college or university you have attended.
Upon receiving your online application data from the Graduate Division, we will send you a confirmation by email, wherein we will request that you provide us with the names and email addresses of your recommenders. When you reply, you may also include the URL(s) for any of your publications, resumes, and home pages for review by the Admissions Committee.
NOTE: Applying for admission to graduate school is often a time-consuming and sometimes frustrating experience. Before submitting your online application, please take the time to check each section for its completeness and clarity of presentation, and please be sure to submit the application by midnight, Pacific Standard Time, January 2, 2008.
REQUIRED DATA
•Three (3) Recommendation Letters
Graduate Division requires that all students submit 3 letters of recommendation from faculty (and employer, if applicable). Please ask your recommenders to submit their letters of recommendation via the online application system for AS&T.
After submitting your application, you will receive via email an acknowledgment from the AS&T Graduate Program. It may take some time for the University to transfer the application to our program; so please be patient. The email acknowledgment will also contain instructions for you to complete waivers for online letters of recommendation. This step is required, and we will not consider your application if it is not completed. Once the electronic waivers are completed, we will contact your letter writers by email with instructions for providing letters. This year recommendation letters must be submitted electronically, and we encourage you to make your letter writers aware of this. We will notify you by email upon receipt of letters from your letter writers. Recommendation letters should be submitted no later than January 11, 2008.
A SPECIAL NOTE FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS: AS&T will NOT accept paper-based letters of recommendation. Only letters submitted online by your recommenders will be reviewed by the Admissions Committee (no exceptions will be made). Please be sure to provide complete instructions to your recommenders.
•Graduate Record Examination (Oldest acceptable exam date: October 2003)
The GRE General Test is required of all applicants. Starting on October 1, 2002, the General Test is composed of verbal, quantitative, and analytical writing sections. The verbal and quantitative sections will be unchanged from their present content. The analytical writing section will be identical to the stand-alone test we now call the Writing Assessment, which was introduced in October 1999. Both versions of the GRE General Test are acceptable.
Test results for the General GREs must be directed to 4833 (the Berkeley institution code) and to 1605 (Engineering Science code used by AS&T).
GRE Scores should arrive no later than January 11, 2008.
•The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) (Oldest acceptable exam date: June 2006)
Applicants from countries in which English is not the official language must take the TOEFL and score at least 570 on the paper-and-pencil test or at least 230 on the computer-based test, or at least 68 on the internet-based test (iBT TOEFL). The institution code for Berkeley is 4833. There is no Department code for the TOEFL. The minimum acceptable score on the IELTS is 7 on your most recent exam. TOEFL or IELTS scores should arrive no later than January 11, 2008.
Be sure to designate UC Berkeley as one of the institutions that can receive official scores; otherwise, we will not be authorized to verify your score with ETS. Use Institution Code 4833 (there is no departmental code for the TOEFL exam).
•Original Transcripts + GPA Calculation Page
We require one official transcript from each college or university you have attended. Please send sealed original transcripts of all University work. Transcripts not in English should include translations from the school that issued the original transcripts. Transcripts should arrive no later than January 11, 2008.
Mail to:

In addition, we require that you complete and submit the GPA calculation page, which can be downloaded from the AS&T website (http://www.coe.berkeley.edu/AST). Please calculate your GPA based on a 4.0 scale, using the numerical formula provided on the GPA calculation page, and mail it with your official transcript.
