Charles Tunstall Multicultural Engineering Program

Michele De Coteau, 2004

The Multicultural Engineering Program (MEP) was originally established as the Minority Engineering Program at UC Berkeley in 1981 to intervene in a devastating cycle of minority student attrition in the College of Engineering and elsewhere. MEP's original charge was to recruit and retain traditionally underrepresented minority students in the College of Engineering.

Since its inception, MEP has evolved as an academic enterprise which adds value to the undergraduate experience of underrepresented engineers. Intense academic programs, close collaboration and program development with faculty, staff, student organizations and other campus units contribute to the success of MEP participants. Since 1981, over 1000 underrepresented students have graduated from UC Berkeley's College of Engineering. MEP is proud that many of our alumni have completed graduate studies and are leaders in industry and academia.
