Program Goals
The goal of the Summer Undergraduate Program in Engineering Research at Berkeley (SUPERB) is
to provide research opportunities in engineering to students who have been
historically underrepresented in the field for reasons of social, cultural,
educational or economic barriers. The program provides students with the
opportunity to gain research experience by participating in research
projects with engineering faculty and graduate students. Upon completion of
this program students will be better prepared and motivated to attend
graduate school.
SUPERB features regular workshops and seminars on the nature of academic
life, standardized test preparation, writing and research skills and
graduate school applications. Informal meetings and social events with
faculty and graduate students are also offered.
Expectation
SUPERB participants are required to attend orientation and complete the
entire eight-week program. Each participant is required to give an oral
presentation and submit a written report describing the results of his/her
research.
Eligibility
The program is open to students with or without prior research
experience, and students who have not participated in SUPERB previously.
The program prefers students who have completed some upper division course
work in one of the following disciplines: Bioengineering, Civil &
Environmental Engineering, Electrical Engineering & Computer Sciences,
Mechanical Engineering, Material Science & Engineering, Nuclear
Engineering, and Chemical Engineering. A minimum overall GPA of 3.0 is
required, with upward trends in grades being preferable. Students must be U.S.
citizens or permanent residents. International students are not eligible
for this program.
Awards
SUPERB awardees will spend eight weeks on UC Berkeley's campus during
the summer to work on a research project in their area of interest. Each
participant will have a faculty and graduate student mentor who will
supervise his or her work and provide guidance. Participants will receive a
$3,750 stipend, double occupancy room and board in university housing, and
up to $600 for reimbursement of travel expenses.
Date of Appointment
June 10 - August 3, 2007

What students have to say about SUPERB
· "SUPERB is especially adept at
providing cutting edge research opportunities."
· "Overall, SUPERB program was a
positive experience. I gained some practical experience and met several
people who taught me about grad school."
·
"SUPERB is excellent! Its a great way to learn about the
graduate experience. You get to network with graduate students and faculty.
You also get presentation skills. The benefits are also the stipend, social
events, travel & housing too."

· "I really enjoyed (SUPERB). I
learned a lot in my lab and I was exposed to issues in my topic I'd never
run across before. Also, socially the program is great. We really got to
know each other via group activities in the beginning and we had enough
free time during the program to make friends and do fun things. So it
really was a well-rounded experience."
· "It was just a spectacular program,
gathering intelligent and fun students from all over the country."
· "The SUPERB program is an excellent
opportunity to find out if research is really 'your thing'. I am only a
rising sophomore, but I am so glad to have had the opportunity to
participate in such a great program so early in my undergraduate
career."
· "The SUPERB program is great!! I
learned a great deal about research and got to know a lot of cool people
from all parts of the country!!"
· "The SUPERB program is a great way
to get paid for doing stuff you'd want to do any ways."
· "So far I have learned. . . that
figuring out what questions to ask (or what goals to set) is more than half
of the work in research."
· "My experience as a SUPERB participant
has given me the opportunity to connect with a professor as well as help
discover that I am highly interested in the application of minimally
invasive instruments. I plan to continue my research after the program ends
and to pursue new projects with my faculty mentor."
·
"Being part of the SUPERB program is a great way to spend your
summer...the SUPERB experience combines an array of academic challenges
with plenty of opportunities to explore, relax, and have fun!."
