Genius Corner: Gain fame with our brain game

His brainteaser is a piece of toast. The first person to e-mail the right answer will have his or her name printed in the next issue of Engineering News along with the answer. Twice a semester, one of the biweekly winners will be picked at random to win two movie tickets, courtesy of Engineering Alumni Relations.

Mr. Smith owned an old-fashioned toaster than takes only two slices of bread at a time, toasting only one side of each slice. To toast the other side you must turn the slice over and put it back in the toaster. It takes one minute to toast one side. If Mr. Smith wants to toast both sides of three pieces of bread, can he do it in less than four minutes?

Send your answer to editnews@coe.berkeley.edu, and include your name, major, and class year. Good luck.
