The sun shines down on new student orientation
During welcome week, new engineering students felt more than welcome to eat lunch alongside McLaughlin Hall’s mascots, the Macchi Bears. The weather welcomed new engineers with sunny blue skies instead of the overcast August doldrums the Bay Area is famous for. The students, freshmen and transfers, basked in the pre-classes calm as they munched on bagged lunches and clutched travel mugs, gifts from the College of Engineering’s Alumni Society. The buzz of student excitement was thick in the air as people met, connected, and chatted about what’s to come. IEOR junior and transfer student from Ohlone College summed up the collective sentiment when she expressed her concerns about the coming year. “I hope classes won’t be too hard,” she said

Apple Engineering party cleans up at the polls with four engineers elected to ASUC

During last spring’s historic election, the Apple Engineering party blew the trend of politically apathetic engineers out of the water. Not only did engineers come out and vote, but they elected a record number of engineers to office. Having such a large concentration of engineers in student government is unprecedented and has led Leybovich to dub...[FULL STORY]

James Dao (B.S.’60 EECS) is a man with a mission. Without formal training in medicine or biology, Dao got involved in cancer research in the 1970s, an interest that only intensified after losing both his mother and mother-in-law to cancer in the 1980s. Now he works around the clock in the search for diagnostic tests and nontoxic multi-mechanism treatments that could dramatically reduce cancer deaths worldwide.

The Silicon Valley inventor and entrepreneur started his 35-year career by founding ETEC Systems, where he developed...
