EJC throws end of the year BBQ last spring
At the conclusion of the past spring semester, the EJC celebrated the end of yet another tough academic year by treating the overworked engineering student body to some free BBQ burgers and dogs. The line for free food stretched and meandered around Bechtel Terrace. Though engineering students may not study this in their classes, they learn from experience that nothing guarantees a rock concert-sized crowd like a little sunshine and a lot of free food.

Bill Gates comes to Zellerbach Hall for a conversation on computing’s future

Bill Gates, chairman and chief software architect of Microsoft Corp., is coming to Berkeley to speak with engineering students.

During his 9 a.m. talk on Friday, October 1, in Zellerbach Hall, Gates will engage in a conversation with Dean Richard Newton as well as answer questions from the audience. Along with his vision for the future of technology, his discussion with Dean Newton will focus on the increasingly global nature of the technology sector, societal impacts like spam and privacy, and the benefits from research collaboration between academia and industry.

Although Gates was in such a hurry to start Microsoft that he left Harvard without a degree, he is known as a strong advocate of education. According to Gates,a solid grounding in science and engineering empowers young minds with the tools needed to make technological breakthroughs and invigorate

New Engineers’ Joint Council president Ryan Doan wants true democracy to rule the organization

Engineers may be a shy bunch, but new EJC president and BioE senior Ryan Doan is urging them to speak up.

“I want to find out what interests engineers have and I want to make the EJC more of a forum for discussion. We don’t want to be a body that gives orders and tells societies what to do, we want to listen and be interactive,” he says.

Last semester the EJC took on a new shape that reflects their commitment to democracy. Various committees were

Iranian engineers form society that mixes close friendships and professional networking

Most engineering societies are started with the goal of fostering professional networking and academic support. In the process friendships are forged. The Society of Iranian Engineers at Berkeley (SIEB) took the opposite approach. They turned a close-knit group of friends into a student society.

When a group of Iranian engineers started meeting for weekly chat sessions a couple years ago, they had no intention of starting a student group. But as the group grew and bonded, the students began
