Black alum saluted in honor of Black History Month

Dr. Gary S. May received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in EECS from Berkeley in 1987 and 1991 respectively.

Among Dr. May’s achievements and pioneering efforts was his contribution to the Berkeley campus in founding the Berkeley student chapter of the Black Graduate Engineering and Science Students (BGESS) with a group of African-American peers in 1987.

While at Berkeley, he was named a National Science Foundation and an AT&T Bell Laboratories Fellow. His thesis research focused on developing a methodology for the automated malfunction diagnosis of semiconductor fabrication equipment.

He has held engineering positions at AT&T Bell Laboratories and at McDonnell-Douglas Corp. He was a National Science Foundation "National Young Investigator," Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Semiconductor Manufacturing, and is currently chair of the National Advisory Board of the National Society of Black Engineers.

In 2002, Dr. May was appointed executive assistant to Georgia Tech President G. Wayne Clough. He also continues to conduct his research program in the school of electrical and computer engineering at Georgia Tech and advise graduate students there.
