NEW ADDITION: MSE professor and alum Ramamoorthy Ramesh feels extremely lucky to be teaching at Berkeley.

MSE professor Ramesh is one of this year’s new faculty hires

This spring semester Berkeley Engineering welcomed home one of its own when they hired MSE professor Ramamoorthy Ramesh.

After getting his Ph.D. in MSE from Berkeley in ’87, Ramesh worked at Bellcore in New Jersey on non-volatile memory devices. He then taught in the MSE and physics departments at the University of Maryland. Despite a great job in Maryland, Ramesh says he always had his eye on a position at Berkeley.

"Anyone would salivate to come to Berkeley," he laughs. "I can't put my finger on it but there is something special about this place and it's not just due to the fact that you can walk around and bump into Nobel laureates."

Professor Ramesh is the only Berkeley professor to hold a joint position in physics and MSE. He teaches one class in each subject.

The two disciplines help with his research on thin films of complex materials, mainly oxides.

His MSE background lets him "grow" new materials, while his physics training helps him understand why materials do what they do.
