Enter the Engineering News senior essay contest

Submit an essay on “What I learned at Berkeley” or “What Berkeley has meant to me” in 600 words or less and win two movie tickets and dinner for two at Zachary’s Pizza. The contest is open to all graduate and undergraduate students graduating in the spring of 2004. E-mail your essay to engnews@coe.berkeley.edu by Friday, April 16. The deadline is firm. This is your chance for fame! The essay will be published in both the print and online versions of Engineering News.

We’re looking for a senior

As a tribute to graduating seniors, Engineering News would like to do a story on the week in the life of a senior one month before graduation. Are you spending your time firing off resumes, making traveling plans, and enjoying your friends, or are you just scrambling to graduate? We want to tell your story. Seeking student speaker for commencement

Every year a student is given the honor of speaking at commencement. If you are interested in speaking at the ceremony, contact Shelley Goodale at 643-1743. The commencement committee will hold auditions for the student speaker on Monday, April 12, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in 306 Soda Hall. If you want to audition, write an original speech on the topic of your choice that is four to five minutes long. The speech must be non-technical and optimistic, have a forward-looking theme, address an audience of graduates, their families and friends, and include a greeting to parents. The speech should also look back at your time at Cal. Give 10 copies of your speech to Shelley Goodale in 308 McLaughlin Hall no later than Friday, April 9.

Nominations open for Bechtel awards

April 2 is the nomination deadline for two of the College’s top undergraduate awards, the Bechtel Achievement Award for graduating seniors and the Bechtel Engineering Scholarship for juniors or sophomores. Nomination forms are available at www.coe.berkeley.edu/current_students/bechtel.html.
