Friends of the College of Engineering,

Spring is finally really here and it is recruiting season. We now know who has been admitted to our College and our job is to get them here! Nice weather helps, but many of us will soon be on the phones as well, espousing the virtues of Berkeley, the Bay Area, and the College.

I was aware that according to a recent NSF analysis , Berkeley awarded more Ph.D.'s in science and engineering in 2003 than any other university in America . However, I recently noticed a new distinction for UC Berkeley. As reported in the Boston Globe March 14, a recent NSF study has determined that of all the women who earned doctorates in science or engineering in the U.S. from 1997 to 2001, more had received bachelor's degrees from Berkeley than from any other college. The listing shows that Berkeley was well ahead of number two Cornell. This speaks volumes, not only about the quality of our students and of the education our undergraduates receive in science and engineering, but also about the mentoring they are receiving that encourages them to continue on to graduate school. Congratulations to our faculty and staff!

I am pleased to announce that Prof. Shankar Sastry has just accepted the Chancellor's offer to become the new Director of CITRIS, our Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society, replacing Prof. Ruzena Bajcsy who has returned to her position on the EECS faculty. A Berkeley graduate (EECS' 81), Shankar was EECS chair from 2001-2004 and was on leave from Berkeley as Director of the Information Technology Office at DARPA for two years before that. Those of us involved in CITRIS thank Ruzena very much for launching CITRIS very successfully and we welcome Shankar and his vision as we enter the "boost" phase!

Finally, a reminder that the 2nd annual Bridging the Divide Conference will be held on campus from April 21-23. Please register soon if you plan to attend this inspiring and thought-provoking event.

Very best regards from our sunny campus,

/rich
