Undergraduate Education
UC Berkeley provides an outstanding education for students interested in
civil and environmental engineering. U.S. News & World Report ranked
Berkeley's undergraduate program in the Civil and Environmental
Engineering Department #2 in the nation for 2009.
Undergraduate education in civil and environmental engineering provides
students with a solid foundation in the scientific and engineering
fundamentals along with exposure to humanities and social sciences.
The objective of the CEE undergraduate program is to prepare graduates to
become leaders in solving societal problems in the areas of public safety,
resource protection, natural hazard mitigation, and the efficient
functioning of urban and natural systems in California, within the United
States, and internationally.
The four-year curriculum, leading to an accredited B.S. degree in Civil Engineering, provides the fundamental background in engineering science, design, and practice for graduates to succeed in the civil and environmental engineering profession or as preparation for advanced graduate study. Undergraduate students have many opportunities for rigorous academic learning, fellowship, hands-on experience, and leadership.
Classes in the Civil and Environmental department are relatively small for UC Berkeley. Students have many opportunities in the classes and outside of the classroom to know both the faculty and their fellow students. The department has several very active students organizations that sponsor social events, peer advising, career events, and community service. The student organizations participate in regional and national engineering design competitions. The design teams are excellent ways for students to become engaged with fellow students, gain engineering experience, and learn about project management.
